Haeundae vs Gwangalli: Which Busan Beach Should You Choose? (2026)

Haeundae vs Gwangalli: Which Busan Beach Should You Choose? (2026)

Busan’s two star beaches, side by side. Haeundae is the big upscale resort beach; Gwangalli is the younger one with the famous bridge night view. Here’s how to pick — or do both.

Last Updated: June 2026
The short version

  • Haeundae is the bigger, more polished resort beach — wide sand, luxury hotels, an aquarium and the Marine City skyline. Best for a beach holiday, families and a splurge.
  • Gwangalli is smaller and trendier, famous for the lit-up Gwangan Bridge, a weekend drone show, and a dense strip of cafes and bars. Best for night views, couples and value.
  • Both are on Metro Line 2 and only a short ride apart, so you really can see both — beach by day at one, night view at the other.
  • If you must pick one: Haeundae for the classic beach-resort feel, Gwangalli for atmosphere and the best night view in the city.

Busan has two beaches everyone asks about, and they’re genuinely different. Haeundae is the famous one — a long, wide beach backed by luxury hotels and the gleaming towers of Marine City, the polished resort heart of the city. Gwangalli, a short ride away, is smaller and cooler: its sand faces the illuminated Gwangan Bridge, and behind it runs a buzzing strip of cafes and bars. This guide compares them head to head — the beach, the night views, the food, where to stay and how to get there — so you can pick the right one (or, easily, do both). 1. Haeundae vs Gwangalli: the quick answer

If you only remember one thing, it’s this: Haeundae is the resort, Gwangalli is the vibe.

  • Choose Haeundae for a proper beach holiday — the biggest beach, upscale hotels and dining, an aquarium, and that glossy seaside-skyline feel. Great for families and anyone happy to spend a bit more.
  • Choose Gwangalli for the famous night view of the Gwangan Bridge, the weekend drone show, raw fish by the sea, and a younger, livelier, better-value scene of cafes and bars.

They’re both on Metro Line 2 and barely 10 minutes apart by train, so this isn’t really an either/or — but if your time or your stay forces one choice, the split above is the whole decision.

The simple rule: daytime beach person → Haeundae; night-view and atmosphere person → Gwangalli. Want both? Beach at Haeundae in the afternoon, dinner and the bridge lights at Gwangalli after dark.

2. At a glance

The two beaches compared on what actually decides it:

Haeundae Gwangalli
Vibe Upscale resort, polished Younger, trendy, lively
The beach Bigger, wider sand Smaller, more intimate
Signature Marine City skyline, aquarium Gwangan Bridge night view, drone show
Food Smart restaurants & cafes Cafes, bars, seaside raw fish
Best for Families, splurge, beach days Couples, night views, value
Metro Line 2 (Haeundae) Line 2 (Gwangan)

Neither is “better” — they suit different trips. The sections below go deeper.

3. Haeundae — the upscale resort beach

Haeundae (海雲台) is Busan’s flagship beach and its most polished stay. The wide arc of sand is backed by the city’s luxury hotels and the high-rise Marine City towers, and there’s plenty to do beyond the beach itself.

  • The draw: a big, well-kept beach, upscale hotels with sea-view rooms, smart cafes and restaurants, and the famous skyline backdrop.
  • Beyond the sand: a large aquarium, the Blueline Park coastal walk and its Sky Capsule, and the Marine City waterfront.
  • The trade-off: it’s the most expensive area, busiest in peak summer, and more about polish than a young, scrappy nightlife.
Pick Haeundae if the beach is the main event, you want a resort feel and a sea-view room, or you’re traveling with family.

4. Gwangalli — the night-view beach

Gwangalli (広安里) is Haeundae’s cooler, younger cousin. The beach is smaller, but it faces straight at the Gwangan Bridge — and after dark, with the bridge lit up, it becomes one of the best night views in Korea, backed by a long strip of cafes and bars.

  • The draw: the lit-up bridge, the weekend drone light show, sitting at a cafe or bar with the sea in front of you, and fresh raw fish (hoe) at the nearby Millak fish market.
  • The atmosphere: younger, livelier and more walkable at night, with generally better value than Haeundae.
  • The trade-off: fewer big-name luxury hotels and a smaller beach; it’s lively at night, so pick your street if you want quiet.
Pick Gwangalli if you want the city’s best night view, a cafe-and-bar atmosphere and a beach base with character, without full resort prices.

5. The beach itself

On the sand, day to day, here’s how they actually differ:

  • Size & space: Haeundae’s beach is noticeably bigger and wider, so it absorbs crowds better; Gwangalli’s is smaller and more intimate.
  • Swimming & summer: both have a designated swimming season in summer with lifeguards and facilities; both get very busy in July–August.
  • Crowds: Haeundae draws the biggest peak-season crowds as the famous name; Gwangalli is busy too, but more in the evenings for the view.
  • Daytime feel: Haeundae feels like a classic seaside resort by day; Gwangalli is quieter by day and comes alive at night.
Season note: outside the official summer swimming season the water isn’t supervised, but both beaches are lovely to walk year-round — Gwangalli especially for the bridge at night.

6. Night, food & atmosphere

This is where the two pull furthest apart:

Night view

Gwangalli wins, clearly. The Gwangan Bridge lit up over the water is the signature Busan night scene, and on weekend nights there’s often a drone light show above the bay. Haeundae has the pretty Marine City skyline, but Gwangalli is the night-view beach.

Food & drink

Haeundae leans to smart restaurants, hotel dining and polished cafes. Gwangalli is all cafes, bars and casual seafood — including raw fish (hoe) eaten with the sea and the bridge in front of you. For nightlife and a drink with a view, Gwangalli; for an upscale meal, Haeundae.

Best of both: spend the afternoon on Haeundae’s beach, then head to Gwangalli for dinner and the bridge lights — it’s a short hop on Line 2 or by taxi.

7. Where to stay & getting there

Both are easy to reach and to base yourself in, both on Metro Line 2:

  • Haeundae has the city’s biggest concentration of upscale and resort hotels, plus mid-range options a few streets back — best if you want a sea-view stay and don’t mind paying for it.
  • Gwangalli skews to mid-range hotels, guesthouses and boutique stays, often with better value and a livelier street scene.
  • Getting there: take Metro Line 2 to Haeundae Station or Gwangan Station; both beaches are a short walk from their stop. Between the two it’s a quick train ride or taxi.

8. Which should you choose?

The quick recommendation by trip style — then remember you can usually do both:

You are… Choose Why
Family / beach holiday / splurge Haeundae The biggest beach, resort hotels, sea views
Couple / younger / nightlife Gwangalli Bridge night view, cafes, bars, value
Here for the photos Gwangalli The lit bridge is the city’s iconic night shot
Want a classic resort feel Haeundae Polished, upscale, full beach-resort experience
Have a day Both Haeundae by day, Gwangalli after dark

The verdict: there’s no wrong answer — Haeundae for the resort beach, Gwangalli for the night view and atmosphere — and since they’re minutes apart on Line 2, most visitors happily see both. Plan the rest of your days with our complete Busan Travel Guide.
